...in the eye of the beholder!
My art is all about the eye. My eye, your eye, the inner eye? Probably. The outer eye? Surely. It is as pure and simple as this. What the eye captures, what the eye isolates, what the eye deconstructs, what the eye perceives; no hidden paths, no conceptual paraphernalia but visions, snapshots, captured and distilled. It is Nature’s sense for aesthetics I marvel at, constantly. My eye focuses on observing its daily workings and also on those anonymous, mostly unnoticed, wonders of the ordinary occurring right before our eyes and just waiting to be grasped. Paper and natural fibers are my living artistic matter. I am fascinated by the possibilities of bas-relief and of the three-dimensional and of the play of light and shadow that follows on. It is a game that is both sensual and creative; an ongoing struggle with the elements and materials in which I largely surrender to the unexpected. I cling on to the matter, well aware that I shall not tame it. I mould, I paint, I burn...the matter resists, cracks, appears to finally succumb and eventually shapes itself into new life!
So what about the eye? Isn't it but the Key...?
